A collaborative work on live imaging of human eccrine sweat glands with Kie Nakashima, Hiroko Kato, Fumitaka Fujita, and other members of Laboratory of Advanced Cosmetic Science, Graduate School of pharmaceutical Sciences, Osaka University, Fumihiro Okada of Mandom Corporation, Hiroyuki Murota (currently Nagasaki University), Yukinobu Nakagawa, Atsushi Tanemura, and Ichiro Katayama of Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University was published in Communications Biology. This is the first paper that reports the dynamic contractile motions of isolated eccrine sweat glands that propel peristaltic transport of sweat.

A paper coauthored with Yoriko Sugiyama-Nakagiri of Kao Corporation was published online in Scientific Reports. This paper reports that perlecan-conjugated laminin E8 fragments promote the differentiation of human iPS cells into skin-derived precursor cells that have the ability to differentiate into adipocytes, osteocytes, and Schwann cells.

Prof. Kiyotoshi Sekiguchi, Sugiko Futaki, Yukimasa Taniguchi, and Maria Hayashi were awarded the Future Creative Invention Award, the highest award for academia researchers bestowed by Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation, with Norio Nakatsuji, Takamichi Miyazaki, Eihachiro Kawase, and Hirohumi Suemori of Kyoto University for their invention of the culture substrate for human pluripotent stem cells (JP Patent 5590646).
